Renters Get Help Going Green
I remember having very limited recycling options when I was a renter, especially in apartment complexes with one or two all purpose trash chutes per floor. However, efforts to protect the environment through recycling programs are becoming more widely available for renters. For example, a newly launched recycling program in the city of Los Angeles was covered in a Daily News Los Angeles article on August 3, 2008. Here is an excerpt:
The city of Los Angeles now has a program that provides multifamily residential buildings with free recycling services.
Residential properties such as apartments, town homes and mobile home parks can participate in the program, and will receive recycling services once a week and blue bins for storage of recyclables.
They will even get you started on your path to recycled enlightenment with educational materials about the types of materials accepted in blue bins.
Tenants need the consent of the property owner or property manager in order to register for the recycling program.
City staff will even contact the property owner or manager on the tenant’s behalf.

If you are a renter concerned about the environment but you do not have access to a recycling program contact your city government office to inquire about what can be done in your area. Or, visit World Watch.org for environmental protection and conservation steps that you can take by making minor changes in your home or apartment, at your place of work and in your daily routine.
