Millions of people suffer from allergies, and one of the most common types of allergy triggers is indoor allergens. Allergens affect the air that you breathe in your homes. From dust mites to pet dander and pollen, allergens cover every square-inch of your home. Here are a few ways that you can help keep your home clean and allergy-safe.
• Keep your home dry and at a moderate temperature to avoid the appearance of mold and mildew, which can cause severe health problems. Common areas for mold and mildew are the basement and the attic. Purchasing a dehumidifier may help to reduce these risks.
• Observe your vacuum cleaner. Does it contain a filtration system that’s certified to reduce allergens? These types of vacuum cleaners usually contain a HEPA system (or a high-efficiency particulate filter) to reduce the amount of dust that may be trapped inside your carpet and upholstery. If you do not own a vacuum cleaner with this system, perhaps you should consider switching to one of these units – or at least a vacuum cleaner with double bags.
• Have your air filters changed on a regular basis to reduce smoke and other pollutants that may affect your health.
• Replace blinds and drapes with washable curtains or shades, and dust your fans regularly.
• Cover your mattresses and other upholstery with an allergen-proof cover.
• Keep your bathrooms clean. Allergens lurk in medicine cabinets and showers, so it’s best to keep those clean at all times. Scrub your tiles regularly to avoid mold and mildew growth, and wash your shower curtains with light detergent, bleach and warm water. Remember to always use gloves and wear a mask while handling household chemicals.

Your home will never be completely free of allergens, but there many different ways that you can reduce the amount of allergens in your home. Remember to clean your home regularly and try a “deep cleaning” once a month, if possible. The more steps you take to prevent allergens from lurking inside your home can provide a safe haven for you and your family.
