Rental's Tips, Renter's Corner

By Amber

Spring is a time for new beginnings, and it’s the perfect time to get your rental home cleaned up and organized.

Want to dive into spring cleaning, but not quite sure where to start? We’ve assembled these cleaning tips to make spring cleaning in your rental home a snap!

Get organized
You don’t want to get all whipped up into a cleaning frenzy and then burn out on cleaning before you’re done. Start your spring cleaning journey by getting organized and making a plan.

Make a list of all the things you want to accomplish during spring cleaning, and how long you think the project will take. Make sure your spring cleaning plan is reasonable. Don’t expect to accomplish your whole list in a day. Divide up your tasks over several days so you don’t get worn out.

Then, make a list of the tools you will need to complete your spring cleaning tasks. Keep all your tools and products in one place so they are easily accessible.

Get rid of the clutter
One of the most important parts of spring cleaning is to clear your rental home of the junk you have collected during the other seasons. Make three piles: keep, donate, and trash. As you come across items, put them in the appropriate piles.

Every so often during your cleaning spree, put away the items in the keep pile, throw away the items in the trash pile and pack up the items in the donate pile. Don’t let your piles get too large, and don’t let your trash or donation items stay in your rental home too long. (They might re-assimilate and become clutter again!)

Spring cleaning tasks
As you are making your spring cleaning task list, consider adding some of these items to the list.

  • Wash the winter grime off your windows to let the spring sunshine in.
  • Change out your warm heavy linens and drapes for lighter, cooler textiles.
  • Rotate your mattresses and replace your pillows.
  • Wash or replace your shower curtains.
  • Reverse your fans to blow cool air around the house.
  • Check your fire alarm, carbon monoxide detector and fire extinguishers.
  • Clean out your pantry and wipe down the shelves in your refrigerator and freezer.

Clear the air
Finally, clean up the air in your rental home. If your rental home has gotten a little musty in the winter, turn on a dehumidifier and/or air filter. Open up the windows to let fresh air in.

Keep up the clean
Remember, cleaning is not just for spring. Once you have your rental home clean, develop some regular cleaning habits to keep it fresh, organized and sparking. That way, spring cleaning will be even easier next year.
